Extensor digitorum (hand) stretch is a wrist and finger movement that stretches this forearm muscle responsible for finger extension.

Stretching extensor digitorum is a part of a treatment for tennis elbow.

How to Perform Extensor Digitorum Stretch (Hand)

Standing Extensor Digitorum Stretch

  • Start by extending one arm in front of you at shoulder height, palm facing down.
  • With the other hand, gently press down on the fingers of the extended hand, encouraging the wrist to bend in the direction of the palm.
  • Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, feeling a gentle stretch along the top of the wrist and forearm.
  • Repeat on the other hand.

You can perform the same stretch when seated or against a wall.

Tips When Stretching This Muscle

  • Avoid bouncing into stretch
  • Don’t overstretch. Stop if you feel sharp pain
  • Be consistent with your stretches. Stretch daily for few weeks at least
  • Perform this static stretch after weight training/gripping activity
